Even though the weather doesn't agree. Fall is nearly upon us. A photo shoot I developed finally came together into a webitorial for Influential Magazine. I'm really happy it got accepted, and very proud of the makeup and hair work I executed. Our wardrobe stylist had to back out because of work a couple of days before the shoot. I had to find someone to cover her and execute the style I wanted to portray. She kicked ass and pulled from a few local vintage stores. We didn't end up with exactly what I envisioned. But I do love the end result. It has a great back to school, grunge feel to it. I hope you enjoy. Fitness Month was an unexpected but welcome turn this month! After not being very motivated myself, fitness wise, I landed three fitness jobs right after eachother. This Spring/Summer 2016, I am excited to see the Academy Sport + Outdoors Running Ad Campaign I worked on. We shot 17 models on day 1, (I literally had 2 hours to get their makeup & hair styled with 1 makeup assistant). TALK ABOUT QUICK AND PRECISE! Then on day 2, we had only 8 left. It was awesome working with the creatives at Academy. And the photographer Matt Jones is truly talented. Here is one photo from the Academy Sport + Outdoor social media feed. Talk about motivation! Watching the talent run for 2 days was pretty awesome. That will power I do have towards work, but not really for the gym. Be sure, I will watch for those Academy Running Ads, in store, in the mail, online and in their weekly email sales. A couple weeks later, I got called to work for a communications company for Six Pack Shortcuts. An Austin-based YouTube Channel and web presence dedicated to health and soon-to-be personal success of people. SUCH A GREAT GROUP! Check out their You Tube Channel at http://www.sixpackshortcuts.com. While working, one of their staff exclaimed, "Jessi, Look!" There I watched a very muscular guy arm curl another muscle man laying as straight as a board. It was a pretty entertaning day to say the least! The next day I was very fortunate to work with Larsen & Talbert Photography! I worked with them 13 years ago, on an Andre Agassi shoot in Las Vegas. It's so amazing that the industry led us back together for another sports related job! This time, we worked for Runner's World Magazine. I was makeup and hair artist for 2 model/athletes for the April 2016 Cover and an editorial story. Cannot wait for this magazine to release! Thad and Lisa were gorgeous, and I was so happy with some unedited images I took a peek at. Here is a photo that Tracy Talbert took on her phone of Lisa and Photographer Michael. As a result, I got very motivated to get back into a fitness routine. Starting yesterday at Tod Pilates North. And yes, I am still sore! Hopefully after yoga today, I can get some muscles to relax.
I wouldn't have these amazing jobs without my friend and collegue Amy Whitehouse from 1 and 4 Productions. She is my biggest influence and so lucky to have her as a friend. If you need an amazing producer contact this wonder woman! http://1and4productions.com It's that time of year, when I remember the jobs I worked on. And the people, the moments that touched me the most. I was fortunate to meet and work with Lizzie Velasquez for a editorial spread for People Magazine this year. I was familiar with Lizzie's story but naively walked into working on such an important campaign, (and wished I was better versed with her story). She suffers from a rare congenital disease which, among other symptoms, doesn't allow her body to accumulate fat. She was inspired by bullying to become a motivational speaker. Even from posts on instagram, facebook and twitter showcasing her story and her beautiful soul, she fights daily. A fight that I have, like many others dealt with in life. But she is making such a huge impact on the world, with others in various global campaigns to fight anti-bullying. I am so lucky to have met her, worked with her, and continue to help spread her infectious love. From the bullying she encountered as a child, to late teens. Her words to these bullies is simply to love them. It's so easy to lash back at the world, at people for making you feel lesser than. Especially seen online. When people like to act differently than normal, or have other identities to do so. Lizzie's strength was so eye-opening. While we were taking photos, strangers would come up to her crying, thanking her for helping them, their children and the for helping make our world a better place. She also has a documentary out called "A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story. It was absolutely amazing. More people need to see this documentary. More people need to love each other. Myself included! I falter, I fight negative thinking every day. I know the rest of the world is as well. It's just weather people want to realize it or not. Be sure to check out her Video Blog Page here Lizzie Velasquez. South by South West (SXSW) this year blew up! Each year it gets bigger, more exciting and eventful! I got to work for What's Tending Live, doing makeup and hair for 3 days on the hostess, Shira Lazar! There were some amazing interviews and talent on this years roster! After that I was called to work a grooming gig with executive Mark Cuban from "Shark Tank". It was for an upcoming episode of "Beyond the Tank" on ABC. Mr. Cuban was a gentleman to work with. Be sure to watch for the Beatbox, Green Team episode! Last, (but hardly least) I got to work for Paper Magazine, doing makeup on DeJ Loaf! A gorgeous up-and-coming hip hop artist, for the 50 Most Beautiful people issue with photographer Anna Webber. I cannot WAIT for that to hit the newsstands! Currently, I am getting ready to leave for Los Angeles, CA for a little bit of last minute rest & relaxation! I will be posting MANY oceanside images, happy spring! May has been a busy month to say the least! I worked with some amazing models, tried new products and new techniques. Enjoy one of my adventures below: I was asked by Cari Wible of Pink Parasol Design (http://pinkparasol.org) to come out and play on a Photo Workshop being held by Julie Paisley Photography (http://juliepaisleyphotography.com) at a new venue, the Sage Hill Inn. Excited to be creative for some bridal beauty, I agreed. I cannot be happier with the images that have came from that shoot. One photo with modeling by Aaryn Gries @aarynelizagries and photo by Julie Pais And another with modeling by Caiti Pattillo @caitiward and Image by True North Photo, (http://www.truenorthphoto.wix.com As of recent, I have been working as an additional (dayplayer) makeup artist and additional hair stylist on a couple of Local 484 Union films, Manglehorn and Pale Blue Dot. And working as an additional on NBC's Revolution. I haven't worked as an additional in years, literally since 2006. Not only is it EXTREMELY humbling. But it's an amazing learing experience. And a great way to meet more local Makeup, Hair Stylists, Special Effects Artists and Crew. As well as seeing and reconnecting with old crew friends. I will actually be back out again this afternoon on Revolution, I cannot wait to work alongside more amazing artists in my field. I leave you with some images that just released from shoots I have worked on. Enjoy! All Makeup & Hair by me! The last photo is of Anne Akiko Meyers, from her Multi-Media shoot we did last fall. We shot her in various environments for her website and new album release called Four Seasons. Please see her website to experience her astounding talent as a classical violinist in photo and video experience! In the last post I shared with you a themed photo shoot by Cari Wible Photography. It was finally shared in a blog; The Frosted Petticoat. They have a great blog for any bride's to be, as well as all the vendors that contributed for the shoot. It was such an amazing time working with alot of local vendors. Photo credits: Cari Wible Photography Location: TerrAdorna Hair Styling: Stephanie Marlar Makeup: Jessi Pagel I was also fortunate enough to work for a model submitting to INKED Girls Magazine. And we got in! Printed for release November 25th, I give you our shoot! Photographer: Eduardo Garcia Model: Illyria Jade Location: TerrAdorna Makeup & Hair: me Cari Wible, myself and another contributor are also getting together planning boudoir shoots for February 1st. Just in time to get your valentines gifts in place for your significant someone! Please see the image for all booking information. Along with that fabulous news, I have been working with photographers, a Pepsi commercial to air during the Grammy's and with bride's to be on their wedding plans. I cannot wait to see what this year brings! To prosperity and a fabulous future!
Along with the adventurous television shows, commercials, music videos and photo shoots, I also work with brides. Lately bride-to-be's have been contacting me non-stop. I'm not complaining by any means, but balancing weddings with a month-or-so long film is very difficult. I don't want to leave anyone stranded. Brides can be tricky to squeeze into any schedule. This season is filled with beautiful bride-to-be's and wedding parties, that I get to work with. A makeup artist/hair stylist really wears so many hats on every type of job. For a bride, a makeup artist can help her/him plan their special look, and just being there, (as a sounding board and confidant) for them. From keeping them calm and comfortable, to keeping the bridal party and mothers happy. But at the end of each bridal beautification, the reward is always there. Seeing the tears of joy, the support and the magic of it all is just amazing. I also get to be a personal makeup artist and/or hair stylist for my long time friends for their big days, that is more magical than words can fully describe. Fall has been filled with those memories and moments. To the right was a very special one of those moments, Jessica, a best friend of almost 20 years got married to Mark Tsai, at the Hollins House in Santa Cruz, CA. Her wedding party consisted of family and friends of hers that I hadn't seen in years. It was SUCH a special day. I even cried after I did HER makeup, I am so happy for my gorgeous friend, for everything she and Mark have accomplished and the wonderful people they are. I am a very lucky girl to have been a part of this day. Makeup by myself on bride and bridal party. Hair for bride by me, bridal party hair by Camilla Betteridge, (San Francisco, CA). Cari Wible is a photographer that I have worked with for a couple years now, she has been mentioned in previous blogs. She asked me to be a part of her "The Great and Powerful Oz", themed and styled Wedding photoshoot. It was fun being able to help Cari in her beginning stages when she needed it. It was only common sense to bring in a hairstylist friend in on the fun! We have such awesome images coming, but we were fortunate enough to have The Austin Wedding Guide publish these three photos on a page in their fall/winter 2013 magazine. A little birdy told me The Austin Wedding Guide is going to publish more images on their blog, and there could be other wedding blog submissions, be sure to keep on the lookout! Photography by Cari Wible, shot on location at TerrAdorna in Manor, TX. Models left to right; Lola, Ana and Shelby. Makeup by me, Hair by Stephanie Marlar. I found that I also have 2 other images in the Austin Wedding Guide. Both shoots also by Cari Wible. I have posted another below, shot on location at BeeLavish Vintage Rentals, Model; Elizabeth. Gown by Juliana Azar, Makeup and Hair by me. It's so interesting how much wedding work I have had this year. Almost as if planning my own wedding, has made some cosmic connection with other brides to be. Super fun wedding fall/winter! Until next time... Earlier this month, I assisted in creating a beautiful fantasy shoot. The shoot concept was by Abby Elaina Hall. She calls it "La Belle en La Bete", which is the 1700's French version of Beauty and the Beast. Since it was also her and her husband, (Justin) halloween costumes, the shoot was an absolute must, and with them as the models.
Abby designed and constructed both costumes, and bought an awesome mask for La Bete. The mask was a headpiece that was full wig scalp with ears, forehead ending under his eyebrows, and tip of his nose. She also had some extensions that I was able to blend into the hair on the mask and trimmed for a more beasty look. I also got to handpaint the hair like pieces on his face to blend the mask seamlessly. Abby's hair ends right at her chin, so with some more extensions and a rat, I built that gorgeous natural looking french provincial high hair. Her low, fish-tail braid I also pulled apart to make it more messy and romantic looking. Her makeup light and romantic as well, to accent her natural beauty. The awesome photos are by Ainsley Joseph Photography. We shot these photos on location at the Chateau Bellvue in Austin, TX. If anyone wants tutorials on either makeup or hair designs. I worked with Ryan Layden on his music video "Holding On' back in September of 2011. I had NO idea it won Best Music Video at the Cobra Film Festival in Kansas! Enjoy the video, it's a beautiful song and very moving video, I am very fortunate that I got to work on this video as makeup/hair and helped a bit with talent's wardrobe! Congrats Ryan, and be sure to check out the link to his website to see his other videos and amazing project "Tangerine" that is being developed. |
